April Showers Drive Disease Pressure on Wheat Crops

Bill Angus, Senior Wheat Breeder

Wheat growers are advised to keep a close eye on their crops in the coming days as April’s showers seem set to continue into May flowering time.

“The main threats to wheat yields this season will be Septoria and eyespot, warned Bill Angus, Nickerson’s senior wheat breeder (PICTURED RIGHT). “The prolonged rainfall in April will have increased the risk from Septoria across all varieties.

Mr Angus advised growers : “Einstein and Alchemy, the two leading winter wheat varieties in the ground now have good Septoria and eyespot ratings but, even so, a robust T1 and T2 fungicide spray coupled with your usual PGR will help protect yields at a time when wheat prices are so high and every extra percent of yield is worth twice as much as a year ago.”
