DEBEN is a soft milling Group 3 variety with excellent all round disease resistance. Very high yields have been recorded in treated, untreated and organic trials.

Deben is suited for drilling from the end of September and has excelled in second and continuous wheat situations. Grain is suitable for a range of soft milling end uses including domestic flours, speciality flours, some biscuit grists and export. Deben has different grain quality characteristics to other nabim Group 3 varieties and should be stored separately.

Deben is suitable for organic situations.

On the 1-9 scales, high figures indicate that the variety shows the character to a high degree.

HUSBANDRY GUIDELINES

ROTATION
Excellent first, second and continuous wheat.
DRILLING RATE
The optimum drilling date for Deben is the end of September through to early October. Deben can be safely drilled until mid February.
SEED RATE
In order to decrease lodging risk, care should be taken with seed rates. Seed rates should be similar to Claire when drilled at the end of September i.e. 200-265 seeds per sq. metre. This assumes good seedbed conditions with moisture available. The earlier the sowing date, the lower the seed rate that should be used. Deben has large seed with a high thousand grain weight. Care must be taken to ensure the crop is not drilled at too high a seed rate.
NITROGEN
The exact amount will depend on soil type, yield potential and residual fertility. In first wheats, early applications of nitrogen should be avoided. In most instances, two thirds should be applied at the terminal spikelet stage and the remainder approximately 4 weeks later.
DISEASE CONTROL
Deben has excellent disease resistance so there are opportunities to reduce fungicide usage particularly when targeting Septoria and yellow rust. Resistance to mildew is moderate so attention should be paid to controlling this disease if infection occurs.
GROWTH REGULATION
Deben is highly responsive to plant growth regulators. Careful timing of chlormequat(CCC) based products is important to reduce the threat of lodging.
HARVEST
In order to take full advantage of Deben’s good grain characteristics, priority should be given at harvest over feed varieties.
