CASSATA is a 2-row winter barley with a high yield potential and good malting quality. It has moderately short straw, very good resistance to Rhynchosporium and brown rust as well as the commonly occurring strains of Barley Mosaic virus. Cassata has recently received Provisional Approval 2 from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD) for brewing use.

R = Resistant S = Susceptible
Cassata has very good resistance to Rhynchosporium and brown rust but is susceptible to yellow rust. Resistance to net blotch is comparable with Pearl and Flagon. Cassata is also resistant to the commonly occurring strains of Barley Mosaic virus (BaYMV 1 and BaMMV) unlike Flagon and Pearl which are susceptible. Cassata has a good specific weight with similar screenings to Flagon. Malting quality is currently being evaluated by the Institute of Brewing and Distilling; initial testing suggests it has similar levels of grain nitrogen, Hot Water Extract (HWE) and Diastatic Power (DP) to Pearl. |
