Nickerson has wheat-breeding programmes in the UK, France, Germany and Spain. Whilst the breeder in each country specialises in producing varieties for their own climate, the exchange of material between programmes allows varieties to be studied across a range of environments. This means Nickerson varieties have been tested for consistency of performance under widely varying conditions long before they ever reach the farmer.
In the UK there are two Nickerson wheat-breeding programmes. One is based at Woolpit in Suffolk, the other at Docking in Norfolk. Whilst a number of basic services to these programmes are shared, the breeding methodology of the two programmes is very different. However both are aiming to produce varieties with good end user gain characteristics. Farmer-friendly agronomic characteristics feature strongly in the strategy of both our breeding teams.
If you have a question for one of our wheat breeders, please ask either Bill Angus (pictured above), who leads the Woolpit based team, or John Barrett who leads the Docking based team.
